There is a certain time of day when I really need to have the little kids occupied. It's when I'm making dinner and Aidan is doing his homework. I don't like seeing them when they're in the TV trance--eyes glazed over, not blinking, no signs of life. I remember growing up and having the TV on from the time I got home from school until I went to bed. I think we all turned out alright. However, now I try to avoid having the TV on as much as possible when the kids are up. Sure, we have family movie night which is always lots of fun. But during that time we still interact with each other.
Sometimes I give them PlayDoh or have them color, instead. But the TV is so e-a-s-y. What's your solution when you have to get something done? I'm grateful for helpful advice.

oh goodness...I use tv too much when I need to get something done in the winter time. All the other seasons I usually send them out into the back yard. I can see them anywhere in the yard from either one of the 2 kitchen windows. Easier puzzles also work well at entertaining them. Or a game. Or I have them use the white board with those erasable markers.
I've noticed when the TV is on too much even that doesn't keep their attention! If the arts, crafts and books don't work, you can always duck-tape and gag them and throw them in the closet! :) j/k
I send them home with someone else. ;) The teacher in me hates kids TV. Would they listen to books on tape from the library and be able to turn the pages at the beep? Or give them some "homework" or have a homework box of crafty stuff (that is only for that time of day so it feels like it's special) that's fun and establishing a habit for school. Want to slap me yet? Duct tape is always a good alternative and it comes in such fun colors these days!
Jordyn has used the duct tape on her brothers while we were gone shopping. I think it is a great idea.
